Gloria White Announced as 2019 Citizen of the Year

Congratulations to Gloria White from Cervantes who was awarded the 2019 Shire of Dandaragan Citizen of the Year last night in Jurien Bay.

Gloria was nominated by Cervantes Community Recreation Centre.

Gloria is an active member of the Cervantes community and has given her time to contribute to community service in a very positive manner for many years. She was a key driver in the recent renovations of the Cervantes Community Recreation Centre (CCRC) including consultation, funding and fit-out details. Together with other members of the planning group she was instrumental in gaining a large grant from WA Government Arts Facility Funding to complete the recent extension.

Gloria and her husband are responsible for the popular annual Nambung Country Music Muster, an event that brings a very large number of people into the area. As a result of the 2019 Nambung Muster, Gloria was pleased to be able to donate over $15,000 to local organisations and state charities.

Gloria is a committed member of the local Country Womens Association (CWA) branch and helps during fundraising events to raise funds that are distributed either locally or through CWA headquarters to help those in need. Gloria also supports local newspaper, Pinnacle Express, as a member of the collating group and the Cervantes Ratepayers and Progress Association. She held the position of President of the Cervantes Community Recreation Centre (CCRC) for ten years, only recently handing over the banner. Prior to that, she held executive committee positions and was an active committee member, working tirelessly towards the upkeep and improvement of the centre. Gloria is the Vice President of the Cervantes Historical Society, Co-Director and Organiser of the Nambung Country Music Muster, Artistic Director and pianist for the CWA Choir.

Gloria is the epitome of quality citizenship in the Shire of Dandaragan in the way she focuses on community contribution and participation rather than personal achievement. Her commitment of time to various community organisations and fundraising demonstrates a community spirit that is hard to match.

Congratulations also goes to all other nominees for the Citizen of the Year award - Robyn Brockman from Badgingarra, Glen Auzins from Jurien Bay, Sylvia Glatz from Cervantes, Opal Wilkins from Cervantes, Claire Scharf from Jurien Bay and Sue Marsden from Jurien Bay who were all worthy recipients of the Community Service Award. All nominees are pictured with Shane Love MLA, who spoke about the importance and quality of volunteers, and Shire of Dandaragan Vice President Peter Scharf.

Thanks also to Mr Mike Kenny, Honorary Freeman of the Shire of Dandaragan for assisting with presentations and the Jurien Bay Football Club for catering and serving on the night.
