Dandaragan resident, Mr Rick Allen has been awarded the National Medal for having over fifty years of service as a volunteer fire fighter with the Shire of Dandaragan.
The National Medal was established in 1975 as one of the three elements of the Australian Honours System. The Governor - General awards the National Medal. The National Medal recognises long and diligent service by members of recognised government and voluntary organisations that risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community in times of emergency or natural disaster. This includes voluntary organisations such as Emergency Fire Services and Ambulance Services. The National Medal is Australia’s most awarded civilian medal. Fifteen years’ service is the minimum requirement to initially qualify for the National Medal. Clasps are available for each additional ten years’ service.
Our written records don’t go back far enough unfortunately to say exactly when Mr Allen commenced service.
More recently, Rick has been the Chief Bush Fire Control Officer and the Chief Fire Weather Officer for the Shire of Dandaragan since April 2012.
The National Medal was established in 1975 as one of the three elements of the Australian Honours System. The Governor - General awards the National Medal. The National Medal is a circular bronze medal ensigned with The Crown of St Edward. The front of the medal features the Commonwealth Coat of Arms in a recessed circle. The rim of the medal carries the inscription “The National Medal”. The back of the medal is plain.
Rick is always available to attend fires as and when required within the Shire of Dandaragan. He has also attended as a volunteer at fires within other Local Authorities such as recently in the Shire of Carnarvon.
Rick is also a very conscientious St John Ambulance volunteer at the Dandaragan Sub-Centre and attends emergency call outs regularly. Just another example of Rick’s voluntary service to the community of the Shire of Dandaragan.
Apart from his emergency service participation, Rick is a very strong community member in Dandaragan and always assists at busy-bees or wherever assistance is needed.
His wife Judy is always willing to be a backup for Rick when any assistance is required for whatever emergency.
