Hours of Work

Varies depending on the position held, most office employee’s work Monday to Friday, minimum 152 hours per month.

Rostered Day Off (RDO)

An RDO system is in place for eligible Shire staff. One day off per month for full-time Administration Staff and one day off per fortnight for employees that work in the Works and Services division.

Up to 14.25% Superannuation (combined contribution)

As well as the required 9.25% superannuation contributions the Council is required to make on behalf of its employees, contributions made by the employee to the WA Local Government Superannuation Plan will be matched by Council up to a maximum of 3%.

Annual Leave - 17.5% Leave Loading

Four weeks annual leave after 12 months service. Leave Loading paid on annual leave taken for non-contract positions with the Council.

13 Weeks Long Service Leave

All permanent employees of the Council are entitled to 13 weeks long service leave after completing 10 continuous years of service in Local Government.  Long service leave accruals are transferable between all local government authorities in Western Australia.

Two Days Extra Leave

All permanent employees of the Council are entitled to 20 days paid annual leave per annum as well as an additional two days public holiday for the day following the New Years’ Day holiday and for Easter Tuesday.

Personal Leave

Person/carer’s and bereavement leave is as per the National Employment Standards.

Staff Training and Development Opportunities

To maximise the potential and skills of its employees, Council is committed to supporting staff training and education and providing professional development opportunities to staff as appropriate and encourages Senior Employees attendance at State and National Association Conferences.

Salary Packaging

The Shire of Dandaragan offers staff the opportunity to salary package income towards certain benefits, through Salary Packaging Australia. Employees can salary package self-education expenses, professional membership fees and Novated Leases on vehicles.  Remote benefits are also available to staff through salary packaging.  Remote benefits include 50 percent of rental expense, 50 percent of mortgage interest and 50 percent of electricity and gas charges to be taken from your pre-tax dollars.

Employee Incentive Scheme

Staff can participate in a reward scheme nominating fellow work mates for their great work.  A monthly $50 Coles/Myer Gift Card is awarded to the most worthy recipient of the month.  The Chief Executive Officer will present the award at the monthly team meeting.

Annual Performance Reviews

All employees are entitled to an annual performance review. The reviews are linked to possible salary review and highlights training requirements for the relevant position.

Social aspect and Lotto

Council staff partiipate in social occasions throughout the year some of which is funded by the staff tuck shop.  On the first Friday of each month council employees wear Jeans for a Gold coin donation which is donated to St John Ambulance.   Employees can also choose to participate in the internal lottery syndicate.

Internal Promotion and Acting Opportunities

Council encourages all employees to fulfil acting positions where available and endeavours to promote existing employees when a vacancy arises.

Subsidised Corporate Uniform – Office Staff

All permanent staff members are entitled to a subsidised allowance toward the Local Government uniform.  On commencement with the Shire, Staff members are entitled to a $400 allowance and $400 allowance each subsequent financial year thereafter.

Personal Protective Equipment – Works & Services employees

All necessary protective clothing and equipment is supplied by the Council to ensure your safety.

Health and Wellbeing Programme

Various programmes are regularly conducted for Shire staff such as Skin Cancer Checks and Flu Vaccinations.  These programmes are free to staff.

Modern Office Facilities

The Dandaragan Shire Administration Office is a modern, spacious, air-conditioned building located in the town of Jurien Bay.

Staff Kitchen Facilities

The Shire Administration Office has a modern kitchen/lunch room for staff use.  Other Shire work-sites have dedicated lunch room facilities.

Employee Corporate Functions (e.g. Farewell & Christmas Functions)

Council provides an annual Christmas Function for all Councillors, employees and their families as well as occasional other functions throughout the year.

The Council is dedicated to giving young people the opportunity to utilise the work experience programmes through their School, enabling them to work in their area of interest.


The Shire of Dandaragan is committed to promoting environmentally conscious development and to creating a more sustainable community.  The Council is currently hosting two Natural Resource Management Officer who work for the Northern Agricultural Catchment Council (NACC).  The NRM officers assist the Shire with environmentally sensitive development and NACC rehabilitation programs in the Shire.
