Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a SULO bin for my property?
Simply telephone the Council Administration Office on 08 9652 0800 and advise them that you require a SULO bin and arrangements will be made for delivery. If you have recently built a property on your previously vacant lot, you will need to contact the Administration Office for a SULO bin and our records will be amended accordingly.
How much does it cost?
Council owns the SULO bin and charges a rubbish rate on each property which is serviced by the kerbside collection - currently $190.00 per annum (2006/07 Budget). If you require a rubbish bin part way through the financial year, you will be levied a pro rata amount of the rubbish rate.
You must pay the rubbish rate if you have a residence built on your property regardless of the frequency of which you stay at the property, or place your bin out for collection. The rubbish rate is not payable on unimproved residential lots.
What can't I put in the bin?
No hot or burning ashes, no bricks, rocks, soil, paints, solvents or liquid waste. Highly odorous foodstuffs should be either well wrapped or wrapped and frozen until placed in the bin the evening before collection. The weight of your bin should be no more than 70kg. The Shire's refuse collectors may not collect your bin if it is overweight or they suspect that there is refuse in the bin which may damage the truck (ie bricks).
If you have any queries regarding the kerbside collection of refuse, please contact the Shire Administration office on 08 9652 0800 or e-mail council@dandaragan.wa.gov.au
What if I need to get to the refuse sites at other times?
If it is an urgent reason ie for health reasons, contact Mr Bob Bridgeman, Council's Co-ordinator Waste Services on 0408 096 117. There will be an emergency opening fee of $60.00. Otherwise, it is up to you to ensure that you take your waste to the transfer station or landfill site when they are open.
Why is the Cervantes Waste Transfer Station open all day on Sunday and the Jurien Landfill Site only open in the afternoon?
Cervantes has a higher population of non-residents or weekend residents. In opening all day Sunday, Council intends that this will cater for those weekenders who wish to tidy up their residence or block and drop off their refuse when leaving town at the end of the weekend.
I have lost my tip pass – where can I get another one?
Tip passes are sent annually with the rates notices. If you have lost or misplaced your tip pass, you must complete a statutory declaration and send it to the Administration Centre, PO Box 676, Jurien Bay WA 6516 in order for another tip pass to be sent to you.
Can I buy a new tip pass?
No. Tip passes are distributed with the rates notices once a year and are not for sale, even if you have lost or misplaced it.
I didn't get a tip pass. Why not?
The tip passes are sent out the with rates notices in August each year.
Tip passes are provided to only ratepayers who have a residence or habitable building on the property and one tip passes (allowing 6 free visits) is allocated to each property. If a ratepayer has 3 properties, they would get 3 tip passes. If you have a vacant lot, you are not eligible to receive a tip pass.
If you have built on your previously vacant property, please contact the Shire Administration Centre who will arrange for you to receive a SULO bin and tip passes. Please note that depending on the time of year that you apply, you will receive a pro-rata number of tip passes and be charged a pro-rata amount of the refuse rates (currently $190.00 per annum).
Can I use my tip pass for a truckload of refuse?
There is a lot more waste in a truck than in a ute or a car trailer and the reality is that the more waste there is, the more it will cost. Depending on the size of the truck, you will either have to part with more than one pass or pay the scheduled fee. It also depends if you have a large amount of pre-sorted recyclables in the truck which can be deposited for free.
I have half recyclables and half non recyclables. How much will it cost me?
Mr Bob Bridgeman will be able to tell you when you get to the site. If your recyclables are all pre-sorted and away from the other waste, he will charge accordingly.
I own a commercial business. Can I set up an account for waste fees?
You need to write to the Manager of Technical Services and Works, Mr Gavin Garris, Shire of Dandaragan, PO Box 676, Jurien Bay WA 6516 who will arrange this facility for you - Jurien Bay tip office.
