Off Road Vehicles

The Control of Vehicles (Off Road Vehicles) Act 1978 was implemented to control all Off Road Vehicle (O.R.V's) within the State.

O.R.V.'s can only be used within PERMITTED areas or on private land with the consent of the land owner.

Basically there are three classes of vehicles:

  1. Road Licensed Vehicles as defined under the Road Traffic Act (these include four wheel drives which can travel offroad)

  2. Licensed Off Road Vehicles (O.R.V.’s) These include 3 & 4 wheel motorbikes, beach buggies and some motorbikes

  3. Unlicensed vehicles as defined under the Road Traffic Act (these include ANY motorised vehicles)

There are NO areas for O.R.V's within the Shire of Dandaragan where Licensed or Unlicensed O.R.V's are permitted. Off Road vehicle registration does NOT include third party insurance.

ALL unlicensed vehicles are illegal within the state and riders could face heavy penalties under the Road Traffic Act.

All beaches, tracks and sand dunes within the Shire of Dandaragan are strictly prohibited for O.R.V. use.

Additional Information

Riders should be aware of the environment and reduce noise levels from their vehicles.

It is COMPULSORY to wear protective helmets when operating motorcycles in any area. Helmets must conform to Australian Standards.

Most areas are permitted for Road Licensed vehicles, however there are some areas where ALL motorised vehicles are prohibited.

For information on allowable areas, please contact the Shires Ranger on (08) 9652 0800.

Penalties can be issued by an authorised officer in relation to the control of Off Road Vehicles.

ANY Vehicle which is not licensed is illegal under the Road Traffic Act. Riders may face Police action for driving unlicensed vehicles.
