Are all dogs covered by the Dog Act and does my dog have to be registered?
All dogs, whether sterilised or of whatever age, are covered by the Act. However, the limits on number and the need for registration apply only to dogs aged over three (3) months.
How many dogs can I keep at home?
No more than two dogs over the age of three months are permitted in the Shire of Dandaragan.
Whose responsibility is it to register a dog?
Apart from the owner of the dog, a responsible person includes the occupier of any premises where the dog is ordinarily kept or permitted to live, or a person who for the time being has the dog in his or her control.
Who is an authorised person under the Act?
A Council Ranger, Police Officer, or any other person Council may appoint, is authorised for this purpose.
Where do I register my dog?
At the administration offices in Dandaragan and Jurien Bay.
Does my dog have to be on a leash outside my home?
Yes a dog must be on a leash in any public place. The collar must bear a current registration tag as well as another tag bearing your name and address.
Please note a public place is any place to which the public has access and this includes front yards.
What if I sell my dog or give it away?
You must advise the Council within 28 days.
Who can complain that my dog is a nuisance (barking)?
If three people, at least two of whom live at different premises, jointly complain in writing, the Council may investigate and if considered necessary, order the owner to abate the nuisance within 14 days.
Will I be notified if my dog is impounded?
If the dog is wearing a collar with registration tag attached, the Officer is required to notify the latest recorded owner.
